Year of the Garden

I know it's the year of the Rabbit but I'm calling it the year of the Garden. We have had lots of people interested in helping out in the Haven Garden this year and I'm more than excited to get this much help!

We are off to a great start getting the garden ready for Spring planting. Janice and Sam started working on the beds last week pulling weeds and harvesting the last of the lettuce, broccoli, and brussels sprouts from the Fall planting.

I joined Janice last Saturday to continue weeding the beds.

We are experimenting with one of the beds to see if we can grow carrots from seeds. After I prepared the bed we sprinkled carrot seeds all over the bed and covered it with netting to keep the squirrels from digging up the bed . Wish us luck!

As for the new beds they are just begging to be planted in. So I did... well... only one bed and all I did was plant a hand full of sugar snap seeds. Janice is going to start some sugar snaps at home and we will plant them in a week or so.

As for the rest of the garden there is lots to do. The weeds are rapidly taking over the area around pumpkin hill and on the other side of the orchard. These areas will be great projects for some of the volunteer groups that will be coming out in the next few weeks.

If you would like to join us in the garden check out our Calendar for drop in dates or contact Lynnelle Bilsey Volunteer Manager at 650-685-5880 x125 or email her at lbilsey@shelternetwork.org if you would like to schedule a group volunteer project.
